Grid Loss Prevention using Inference Agent
$100B leaks from the global grid every year as non-technical loss. Recovering at least 2% which is approx. $2B (or 1.2B net recovered revenue) may not require a single new sensor as Inference AI Agents help to solve it. Here’s the why and how
Opportunity
Globally, non-technical loss(NTL) such as grid asset theft and tampering costs utilities an estimated $100 billion a year across the world. (source : Northeast Group).
This is structural recurring leakage for utilities measured as total losses run anywhere in the percentage bracket of 5% to 15% worldwide, majorly varied due to regional grid maturity. Even a 1% reduction is ~$1 billion recovered annually which is enough to self-fund the next wave of grid projects.
Solution
Some utilities are mature in terms of their both physical grid and digital grid but some have been working towards it, For the latter, the usual reflex executives have is: “To find losses, invest first in hardware.” such as sensors, drones, cameras – a massive upfront bill before a dollar comes back.
I think that’s backwards. For most grids, the data to find this already exists – in the meter and billing records you collect today. The opportunity is building an “inference engine” with a multi-agent system.
Multi-Agent System to Address Non-Technical Loss for Power and Energy Sector
Active Data Foundation Checks: Meter Data + Billing Data = Data Quality + Data Security
Inference Agent (To Identify Financial Losses Using Grid Topology Reconciliation)
1. Core Inference Engine Capability: Calculate dispatched energy in and out at each node of grid to find delta loss
2. Adcanced Capabilities: Extrapolation, Anomaly Detection Model, Weather data to separate the equipment failure losses.
Financial Loss Calculator Agent (To Prioritize the Identified Losses)
Score each loss with monetary value and prioritize them based on embedded pre-defined priority criteria by utilities.
Field Crew Optimization Agent
Value Add-On Capability: Limited field crew is another systemic utility challenge in addressing these losses. AI optimizer leverages Financial Loss Agent recommendations to optimize crew dispatch with confidence score for field visit. (Not all losses need to be addressed, only addressing the highest order losses in sufficient.)
Prerequisite : data quality, data completeness and data security
1. Inference Agent — To find the loss.
The grid’s natural topology hands us a gift: the substations to distribute to consumers topology is a clean tree. Power flows top-down through known parent-child nodes, so reconcile each level against the one below — aggregate consumer draw vs. energy dispatched, and the delta points to the loss. The structure is the fundamental inference engine. We can add advanced inference engines such as extrapolation from historical data, anomaly detection model, and add weather correlation against data drop-off to separate true theft from equipment failure.
2. Economic Agent — To price the loss.
Not every leak is worth a truck, field resources are limited. Hence, this layer scores each anomaly by estimated financial loss and ranks it against the utility’s own value thresholds — turning a list of alerts into a prioritized P&L decision.
3. Prescriptive Agent — To act on the loss.
The near-free add-on. Once the above layers exist, field crew dispatch can be further optimized: send limited crews to the highest-dollar site first, not the nearest. Shift the problem from crew manpower limitation to crew optimization.
